features of the Colony. The School was started in 1891. The matter was first mooled at a public mesting of the residents, public committee was appointed, sub- scriptions were son collected and a mat- shed school and schoolhouse were crectorl on a site kindly fent by Mr H. N. Mody. For some time, the school, under the some. what ambitious title of the British Kow- loon College, was carried on very suCCDAR- fully. Between forty and fifty children more enrolled as pupils, and the average attendance was good. Children attended. from Kowloon Docks, Cosmopolita Ducks, and Yaumati and Tsimshatsui. Grant-in-aid School it seemed to have a brilliant future. Situated apart from con- taminating Chinose surroundings, tho school served to attract families to Kow loon, and the attendance was steadily on the increase. Unfortunately, the typhoon of July, 1990, swept away the school.. This might have been accepted as sufficient excuse for an appeal to the Gorermest for assistance in providing for the educa tional requirements of the Peninsula, but the Committee struggled on hopefully until the end of December when the collapse rame, the toucher accepting a more lucra- tive situation.
