HONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2, 1897.

Da J. M. Atkinson, Principal Civil Modi- cal Officer, has furnished the Government with a special report on the prevalence of bubotic plague in Hengkeng during the years 1895 and 1895. This is a subject that has been very extensively reported upon by other medical mon, bat Dr Atkin- son's contribution is valuable in that it brings together in concise form most of the main facts connected with our knowledga of the disease in Hongkong. In 1895, the total number of cases reported was 44; in 1896, the number was 1,201. Dealing with the latter yoar, Dr Atkinson shows that the percentage of mortality amongst the Chinese was 89.5; but in cases dealt with at the Hospitals the percentage of deathe was only 74.00. From some statistics for warded to Saigon from Bombay, we learn that in 50 cases treated with Dr Yerain's serum the death-rate was only 34 per cent., and there appears to be good reason for be- lieving tint, after allowing a discount for

the extravagant claims of De Yorain's; friends, his serum is of considerable value in

the treatment of plague ceas. The Geyer-

Much has already been written on, Dr Yersin's relations with the Government officials in Hongkong, ao in this connection the following extract from Dr Atkinson's report has the greater interest :-* Towards : the end of June, 1860, Dr Yersin arrived from Saigon with plague serum which ha had obtained from Professor Roux of Paris and some which he had prepared himself at Saigon.
