The boatman tried to arrange the affair by offering a small san. of money, but the Customs officials Laughtily de- naanded 'several tons of dollars before they could talk. The boatraaster thereupon returned to Canton by slipper boat, and an intimation of the difficulty was for- warded to Hongkong.
