HONGKONG, SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 1897.

In the House of Commons on the oth March, there was an interesting debate on the strength of the navy. The discussion arose on the Navy Estimates by Sir Charles Tilke calling attention to the relative strength of the ships and men, and after- wards Sir J. Colomb raised the question of uang the Royal Marinos for the defence of naval buses. As Hongkong is essentially: a naval huse, probably the most important naval base on the whola Pacific basin, the discussion ought to have some interest here, more especially as there is a growing be. lief that the defences of the Colony ard none of the strongest, that the garrison in too weak to malulam the integrity of the

Contracts for Nival Sanatorium at Peak being augmented, Sir John Colomby had the courage of his convictions to force the House to a division upon a motion to the effect that it is desirable to utilise Royal Marine Artillery and Royal Marine Light Infantry at the naval basea and such de fended costing ports abroad as were re- quired for the general service of the naval stations, in order to relieve Royal Artillery and line regiments for service elsewhere. He held that the demands of the Navy should not be allowed to break up the army organisation he stigmatised sending 'the lower of the infantry of the country, the Foot Guards' to garrison duty abroad. Several military men advocated the change as opening up a career for the Marine officers. Mr Gosehen, who replied in his best debating style, said one argument that mused him was the plea of the enormous cost involved by the occupation by the army of Bermuda and Hongkong and other ... 2/01 places, of the unnecessary expenditure - ...20curred for a large number of superfluum ... 201 ... 2/0
