"Sound is conveyed in a very capricious way through the atmosphere. Apart from wind, large areas of silence have been found in different directions and different dis tances from the signals, in some instances even when in close proximity to the sound signal.

"1.—That he is out of ordinary Learing distance, because he fails to hoor the

Tho Uxtra States Government published similar information to the above in 1885, in which the following additional hints also appeared.

"

The Mariner should not expect to hear a fog-signal well when the sound must reach him over land, as over a point er an island."

"And, when there is a bluff behind the fog-aignal, should be prepared for irre gular intervals in audition, such as might be produced could the sound ricochet from the Trompet, as a ball would from a cannon; that is, he might hear it at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 miles from the signal, and be it at 1, 3, 4, 7, 9, and 11 miles distance, or at any other combination of distances, regular or irregular."

These gentlemen have been recently on a sporting tour in the Malay Peninsula,

Dr Bardon came out to China as a missionary as far back as the year 1852. The Rev. William Wharton Cassells, of the China Inland Mission at Shanghai, has been appointed Bishop of Mid-Chian. The new Bishop is a
