it would be possible to take somTO GE- ception. But let it pass. This lady's article is made a special feature of the isson of the Budget in which it appears. It spreads itself over seven "columns of the paper and is illustrated with three portraits of the writer... Miss Banks says that while in Americs there was an aristocracy of money, thers was in England an aristocracy of blood who did not take pounds, abil lings and pence into consideration, That is her own statement, and it seems on the face of it, a not altogether in- credible one. Miss Hanks, however, was strongly of opinion that American... dollars and coats were something of a social factor in England. So this... Americen Lady Journalist determined to make an experiment, ostensibly to prove that she was right, and, presum ably, with the more practical object of advertising herself a littlo by supplying some sensational copy to the DOWI-
vertisement, which appeared in the Personal columns of a prominent Lon don newspaper. It was as follows :—” A young American Lady of maine, wishes to meet with a Chaperon, of Highest Social Position, who will introduce hor into the Best Eng- lieb Society, Liberal terms.-- Address Heiress." Calling two days after- wards at an advertising agency in Plo cadilly she found eighty-seven letters in reply to ” her advertisement. They came from every fashionable neighbourhood in London, and the writers signed their full names and titles. As a matter of fact, a number of titled ladies, evidently in straitened cirenmetances, offered to civilise Miss Elizabeth L. Banks, by way of adding to somewhat scanty income. Of course it is sad that English ladies of title should be reduced to this, but it was Got necessary for Miss Elizabatli L Banke to undertake ber somewhat dis- reputable enterprise in order to make this deplorable fass known. Although-- nearly every latter she received. was marked Confidential Private, or Personal, Miss Elizabeth L. Banks, gives a number of samples of the commu- PATENT MEDICINE PROPRIETORS nications she received and gloofiilly.com EDIS on their contents. All these Rad letters seem perfectly honest straightforward at all events, and Miss Elizabeth L. Banks seems to have quite enjoyed the simplicity of the writers as contrasted with what she would perhers call her own cuteness. She went to -the houses of several of the lady notes» pondents; still keeping up the false pretence with which she had started on her campaign. She even met by appointment, a number of unfortu nate gentlemen who in their letterm had suggested the possibility of s matrimonial alliance. Of an interview with one of the latter-sho says... I wore tay most stylish looking costume, various pieces of show jewel- lery and a pair of diamond earrings, thinking to impress my would-be-bus- - band with a sense of my wealth and
afternoon any suitor made his ape pearance. He was a fine-looking aris- tocratic man of middle age. . flis man-- ners were refined and elegant, and I could not help feeling that I was deal- ing with neither a fool for a knavo bat with a thorough gentleman .. a He informed me that he was a widowerd of excellent position hat that he we somewhat financially embarrased." On making investigations afterwards Mine Elizabeth Banks found that this goutle wan was exnetly what he represented imself to be- country gentleman of titled family, who was unxions to mě. cruit his decaying fortense Poor country gentleman of titled family, to be befooled and utilised for the ignoble purpose of making copy for an American Lady Journalist
