The China Mail,

HONGKONG, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1883

THE Advisory Committee to the Liqui- dator of the Balmoral Gold Mining Company, Limited, have issued a pamphlet, addressed to the shareholders. which will, no doubt, be read, with con- siderable interest. The patophlet com mences with a precis of the somewhat remarkable history of the company and shows (what the shareholders know only too well already) thas some two lakhs of dollera have vanished in the infinito azure of the past. A gold mins is always more or less of a lottery, and although the shareholders in the Bal moral concern bave hitherto always drawn blanks it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that they may bereafter experience the pleasure of drawing a succession of valuable prizes. Indeed, to judge from the Alyisory Committee's report there does not, ЕВСКА to bo any adequate or proper reason why their previous experience as regards the mine should have been so melancholy as they have found it. Although the Committee show conclusively we cannot say sátás- factorily--that the two lakhs of dollars have actually disappeared, they do not describe the manner in which the dieap- pearance of that not altogether telfing Bam was effected. That is a matter which they apparently considered it. inexpedient to expatiate upon. How- ever, the shareholders have now the satisfaction of knowing the nonal posi- tion of affairs-and that is elwira a satisfaction however had this "actual position of affairs may be. In order .10. give the shareholders that more pe less melancholy satisfaction, Mr Carl Georg Las taken rant amount of trouble in the way of investigating and generally 'red- ding up* matters in which the company are, orought to be, interested. More than that, this very energetic gentleman has been able to obtain a good desl of what seems to be incontrovertible eridonee ea regards the prospects of the mine. Gross mismanagement, and, perhaps .....166 omething even more reprehensible- accounts for the greater portion, if not the whole, of the Company's misfortunes, According to the report of the Advisory Committee, it would appear that the outlook for the company, giren good management, is anything but gloomy. The opinion of Mr Henderson, who is referred to as a practical miner of excep donally high character and great ex- perience is decidedly hopeful. Speak-

teef' he says?

This is my favourite line of reef on the whole place, there is body in it plenty to work on, an average, low yield but ́s tras Inde, It is not the outcls per ton1 gold mines which pay the best but minas "of the Queen kind with big bodisa of "à ca, AMIKAZY yield. Your mixes at Mt. McDonald are more than worth working, but far have not had a chance; briefly put, I would strongly advise the Hongug Company through you to ‘stick, to the mine....” Ida- sire to use every caution in giying an spizion and to be on the safe side, poder-estimating rather than otherwise. I therefors tell you and your Company to hold on firmly bers (viz, the Queen.), and if they have par dence and this mine in worked with skill and honesty they hold a most promising property."

Whatever may be the potentialities of the mines in the way of providing fat dividends for the shareholders, there can be no doubt whatever that those poten- tilities have not yet beea fairly tested, The gross negligence and ignorancë of those responsible for the carry- ing on of the work

*the

minta procluded the possibility of any such test being made. The directors however, do not seem to have ever lost heart altogether, and they are Bren sanguine enough to expect that the sum of £4763, which Mr Hender- son gives as his estimate of the amount required to put the mines in working order, will 1 be readily forth- coming.
