WEDNES-
Evany year the report. of the British Postmaster General contains a good deal of interesting information regard- ing the extraordinary efforts which the employees in the General Post Offion Take in order that letters and parcels which do not comply with the postal regulations may reach the persona to whom they were intended to be sent. It seams a difficult task to find the intended recipient of an unaddressed or mis-directed letter, but it is a task which is frequently recomplished. Of the total number of letters dealt with last year, no fower then 15,914 were reissued to corrected addresses and some six millions of letters were ro-posted to the senders. Looking at the matter from a severely official point of view, a Jetter addressed Walker, London' is a thing which ought to be cast aside and left to its own resources. Indeed, it may be baid that it might be sup- posed that it would be, an offi- dial sonse, quite as invisible to the postal authorities as a barrister' who ppeared in court without his wig and gown would be to the Lord Chief Justice of England. But it appears that the officials who oro responsible for the currying out of the important work for which the great institution in St. Martin's-le-Grand axists are not ab- solutely bound band and foot by Red Tape. They are not as very exalted in
WATSON & Co., their own estimation that they cannot

make an effort to suit the convenience and wia the approval of the public. They go beyond the strict official limits of their duties in order that the public may obtain the fullest possible advan- tage from the existence of the General Post Office. In many cases they take almost incredible pains to sure that a letter shall reach its proper destation. In fact it may be said that they have, in this respect, burst the bonds of Bed Tape and that they are endeavouring, to the best of their ability, to carry on the business in which they are engaged in a rational and business-like manner. Would that wo could say the same thing about the Post Office off- ciale in this colony! There have been of late numerous complaints, not merely of the attitude of in- difference which these officials take as regards the public convenience, but of utter failure, and neglect in what, oven in the strictest official sanse, are clearly and unmistakabl their ordinary duties. Within the last few days such complaints have been many and bitter;
