most people in the colony, and any miti- 8.ation of the nuisance deserves to be recognised, if it does not aleo call for the gratitude of the community. Wa do not know whether it was mere caprice or contempt for public feeling which prompted Mr Price in selecting so nappropriate a site for this parti cular monument, but it is a most sur- prising thing that his scheme was ever allowed to be carried out. In a public thoroughfare such a structurs could not possibly baregarded with anything more thun toleration, but in a narrow pathway leading to the principal place of public worship in the colony it is simply repulsive and disgraceful. An outcry for its abolition has been raised many a time, but in vain. The Public Works Department seems utterly unequal to undertake the task of removing it to a place where it would be less likely to offend the visual and olfactory organs of the community. We have never been able to see why there should be any difficulty in regard to this. Nor can we conceive any reason why that exceedingly unsuitable site should have been chosen for the structure. However, it has been placed there and seems destined to remain there, becausa it is held in its position by: Red Tape. We do not know whether in Officialdom the principla that the King on do no wrong is held to extend to the beads of Government departments in this colony, but the history of Price's Abomination, certainly points to that conclusion. The Niche is undoubtedly an eyesore and an outrage on common decency. Its presence his bean vehemently pro- 1871 tested against aver since it began its odions existence, but, apparently for so other reason than that it was placed there by the fat of the Hos. ́J. M. Price, Surveyor Geuerul, and with the sanction of the Governor it is as irremov- able as the Rock of Gibraltar. No doubt it will be regarded as the very height of ignorant presumption on our part to suggest the possibility of removing the Monument,' with very little

Co., trouble, to a place where it would be equally convenient and very much less of a public auisance. We may be entirely and hopelessly wrong, but we can see no insuperable difficulty in the way of excavating the bank behind the Monument and removing the structure backwards from the roadway and, at lesst, placing it in such a way that it should not obtrude itself on the public gaze. Right or wrong, this suggestion will be received with official derision, and the Monument' will still re main ssa conspicuous and an indisputable proof of the genius of Mr J. M. Price and of the existence of that divinity which protects the do- ings of Oficialdom from public criticism in this coloay. In view of the fact that the Monument is likely to remain with us as a permanent institution (un- less some disgusted citizen should copy. the methods of the anarchists and *borab' it) it is gratifying to know that in one respect it has been rendered lessTM objectionable than it was formerly. ADDRESSES Such as Mr Justice Ackroyd made to the solicitem in the Summary Court yesterday are somewhat umurual în a Civil Court, and the remarks of his Lord- ship must have caused no small degree of annoyaaco. We cannot assume for a mo- ment that what be mid was intended to ap- ply to every individual member of the Bar presint,
No distinction was made, and probably could not be made, by his Lord- ship, who simply spoke of the plaintiff's so- liciter, and consequently, a cortain amount of misapprehension has arisen; and it is. rather hard upon those gentlemen whose condact has always been blameless that they should have been addressed along with the sclicitor, or solicitors, who had wristen to a defendant, for his solicitor,'
