entered the military service of Fratos in 1885, at the sohuel of St. Cyr, way Baxt to the Algerian waze in 1830; while acting as aide-de-camp to Gen. Achard, took part in the expedition to Antwerp in 1832; attained to the rank of Captein in 1833; and, aftar holding the post of side-do-camp to several African generals, and taking part in the oa- sault of Constantine, was nominated Major of Foot Chasseurs in 1840, Lieut. Col. of the Foreign Legion in 1842, Coloast of the 41st of the Line in 1846, and General of Brigade fa 1848. When, in 1855. Gen. Canrabert lett the Crines, Gon. Mucliabos, then ia France, was selected by the Emperor to succeed him in the command of a division; and when the chiefs of the allied armies resolved en asanalting Sebastopol, Sept. 8, they assigned to Gen. MacMahon the perilous past of carrying the worke of the Malakoff: For his brilliant aneeses on this occasion ho was made Grand Cross of the Logion of Honour; and in 1856 was asminated a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. Gen. MacKaban, who took a con spicuous part in the Italian campaign of 1859, received the baton of a Marshal, and was treated Duke of Magenta, in moration of that viotary. He represented France at the coronativu of. William III. of Prassin, in Nev., 1861, was nominated to the command of the Brd corpe d'armée Oct. 14, 1862, and was nominated Governos General of Algeria by doores Sept. 1, 1364 In this capacity ho inaugurated a new system, the tandener of which was to ersate sa Arab kingdom.
