greater than we can bear to recognise any necessity that exists for asking Dr Doberek to sit in judgment upon himself. The Director of the Observatory has already, established a reputation for puguacity and obstructiveness, and the Executive know it hotter than any one clas in the Colony. Why should on impracticable man, whose setion is to be seriously called in question, be placed: in the position of judge or white washer of his own official conduct? Dr Dobarck is generally regarded by the Executive as the most difficult sub- ordinate to manage and deal with of all the officials in this unfortunatè Colony. 2/6To make the Director of the Observa- tory other than a witness before tho Committes which, will sit to-morrow, is not the happiest mode of bringing the worthy Doctor to reason. These queerly. constituted Commissions may be intand- ed by His Excellency the Governor as the monument be purposes leaving be bind him in this Colony. There have been one or two already; and this inquiry into the Observatory, if it be con- ducted under the direction and chair- manship of Dr Doberck, will formanother instance of how not to do it. We do not for a moment suppose that the professional members, whose nautical experience is well-known, are not quita capablo of keeping Dr Doberok in bis proper plass, but their deliberations

useful and the evidence they elcit would be of much greater value if the Director of the Observa- tory were excluded from the Com- mittea. He was not a member of the last Commission-only a witness, aud there is even less reason why he should.
