THE meeting of Licencing Justices bald yesterday was remarkable in more than one respect. In the first place, there was what might be called a record! attendance, there being no fewer than thirty-seven most potent, graveandrove rend J. Ps. present. As a rule, the list of names of Justices present on such occasions does not contain more than a modeat half-dozen, and these are usually pretty much the same namlés. The large assemblage of Justices did not indicate any feeling on the part of the colony's men of light and leading' against the multiplication of those low-class drink shops of which there are already too many in the colony. This, indeed, is a rantter in regard to which our local Justices as a body have shown themselves to be peculiarly apathetic. Why, then, was there this unprecedented interest shown in the case which, dame before them yesterday? The reason, we think, is very obvious, and, unfortunately, it was far from being a creditable reason. The applicant is a man against whose respectability or fituess nota single word was said. The place for which be wished to obtain a licence is the first floor of the new building erected by Mossrs Hum- phreys and Co. at the upper terminus of the Peak Tramway.. It was intended to be used as a buffet, for the conveni- ence of travellers by the tramway. Its position would be somewhat anala-

that of a railway gous to freshment room. and like railway refreshment rooms it would have, as adjuncts, retiring and dressing rooms for ladies. The name of Mr J. D. Humphreys (oneof the mast enterprising and successful business man in this colony) as one of the sureties for the applicant was sufficient guarantee that the buffet would be conducted in

The the best possible manner, establishment of such a place for tramway pas- the convenience of sengers would ha an enterprise as to the financial Sucomas of which there might be some doubt; but that, of course, was a matter with which the Justices had nothing to do. As a matter of fact, the great majority of Jus tices did not consider the case on its merits at all. A potition against the
