THE problem of how to adapt Queen's Rond so as to stand the great amount of ricksha traffic upon it has still to ba solved. In the report of the Director of Public Works for 1892 it is stated that the roads and streets had been maintained in as satisfactory a condition as the extensive works of sewerage end water supply carried out by the Public Works Department and the works carried out by the Telegraph (?) and Gas companies during the past year Gods per Gerda undelivered after this would admit. roads and bridges in Victoria is set down, as having cost the respectable sum of $20,242 If we remember. rightly, the macadamrising of certain thoroughfares and portions of thorough- fares was something of the nature of an experiment. If so, it cannot be said that the experiment has turned out well. If no better results can be..obtained from this method of road-making than is evident that those which we' seë, some other method.must be tried before it can be said that the principal 'straats and roads of the city are in s satisfac- tory condition. There is en immense ampant of ricksha traffic on Queen's Road, and the narrow wheels of these little conveyances have undoubtedly & way of cutting into the surface of the road, which causes more damage perhaps than would be done by the wheels of 2/8

hoavior vehicles. But if this busy 2/81 thoroughfare is to be maintained in 3/94 state that can he regarded as Fron tolerable it must he dealt with, firat and foremost, with a view to the special re- quirements of ricksha traffic, because that is the principal kind of trafic which passes over the road. A year OT two ago there was good deal of discussion as to the best way of dealing with the road, and various methode were suggested. The late Mr Samuel Brown, when ho esme, here Surveyor General, had, some- thing of a reputation for roadmaking, and he certainly found abundant oppor 72tunities for showing any special skill which he might possess in this particu- lar branch of the work of the Surveyor General's Department. At that time the complaints about Queen's Rond were
