good deal of unnecessary trouble yester day afternoon to obtain certain in- formation about the Alves defalcations. The information was contained in the answers to questions, of which notice bad en given at list public meeting of the Legislative Counel, which answers Mr O'Brien deemed it proper to give at a private meeting of the Council held yesterday afternoon. We do not blame the Colonial Secretary for desire to supply as early as possible the information requested by Mesers Chater and Whitehead, but we think that it ought to have been evident, even to an Official with Mr. Qrièp's Suprema contempt for public opinion, that this information was not required merely to gratify the personal curiosity, of the two Unothoisi Members who ask- ed for it, but to moot a very natural desire on the part of the public to know something about the nature, extent and history of the Alves defalch- tious, and of the grare Official scandal involved in these deflation. We think also that Mr O'Brien's ADE of

him that, as the questions were put he' proprioty ought to have suggested to

public meeting, the answers should have been given publicly that is to say, in

the presence of representives of the press. We should be glad to think
