HONGKONG, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 31, 1892,
1892.
THR year which has now almost re ached its gloge has been a comparatively quiet and uneventful one. So far as this colony is concerned, it has been, in some degree at least, a period of reat and recuperation, a period during which the community has recovered a little from the evil effects of the fever of speculation which made the previous year the gloomiest in the history of Hongkong. If the recovery has not beca so rapid as could be desired, it may at least be said that the colony. is in a healthier condition financially then it was twelve months ago and is able to look with more calmness and confidence towards the future.
There have been" few events in the world abroad which have affected the colony greatly. One of the incidents of the year which awakened, naturally, a good deal of interest was the meeting of the Monetary Conference at Brussels, which may now be said to have, proved utterly, abortive. It can hardly be said that much hope was entortained at any time with regard to any beneficial result from this international Palavor;
and this has taken the edge off the disappointment felt on account of the Failure of the Conference to find salvation for silver. We can still; however, toka to ourselves such conianlation as may be
