WIT the help of tables contained in Der Ostasiatisch: Lloyd and the quarterly returns in the Customs Gazette, we are able to judge pretty accurately of the extent of China's foreign trade in 1888. The Cestas re- cepte may not indicate with perfect a- caracy the volume of the trade, but they form a saciently correct test wherewith to judge of the increase or decrease of the trade as compared with previous years, The figures are certainly not very en couraging. Apart from opiem dres and opiam lekin, the Custome receipts show no Improvement over those of last year. The increase of two million, fuels shown in tha table given below is entirely contributed And this inoresan is easily by opium. accounted for when it is remembered that' the rise in the lekin only came into foroo in February 1887 and that the change disturbed greatly the normal trade in opian daring the first half of that year, a large quantity of opium being rushed in before the enhanced taxosine into operation. That the increas is due to this fiscal change, and not to an improvement in she opium trade, is shown by the fact that it- 1.
