Deducting from the total compensation to be giran to private pier owners, the azount which represents the Government share of the Reclamation (which portion of the scheme is wholly for the public besiellt, and therefore to that extent excluding the soral claim above referred to) the Gogemoe understands that the maximum sum re quired for

compensation

in respect of piers, both public and private (it being imposible fer some weeks to obtain more cart figures), will be $189,00 which, together with the $10,000 above referred to, tanken up a total mum of $220,000, or 192 cents per foot of the lot-owners portion of the Reclamation, or four per cent of the profit, which accord. ing to the lowest extimate will be derived from the project by the frontage lot- holders.

His Excellency closes his letter with a kind of that that the Government will “ do the work, if the lot owners decline to accept the term, and accompanies this with the expression of a hope that the lot-holders will accept the modified Scheren. Of course, all this proceeds on the assumption that the entire body of lot- owners have assented to the soheme a | proposed by Mr Chator. We are sararod that such is not the casa; and if there be alli dissentient was who block the way, they will probably have to be doula with* later on. It not a little remarkable that, in face of what is generally supposed to have been a strong repreemtation made by the Governor against this enormous present being anda to the marine lot-holders, the Secretary of State should have decided this. maiter against the general body of mate payers, no maily, so sirily and so warily, Kadeed, the general body
