HONGKONG, MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 1889.
Tas very serious riot, which occurred at Chinking Inst week, a full report of which we publish in another column, shows to what dangera foreign residonta in the Treaty Ports may sometimes to exposed. The smallest grievance, inagioors or real, is sufficient occasionally to enflame a crowd of ignorant natives, and once a mob of Chi Dess have started a riot, they are capable of the wildest acts. The Chinese manda rina, as in the Chinking care, invariably prove unequal to the occasion, and tho pre- sance of the undisciplined soldiers they Command, instead of aiding in the reato tution of peace, proves often an encourago- ment to the rioters. Biots such as the one that happened last week, have fortunately not been very numerous of late; but we have now and again clear indications that the feeling towards foreigners has not im. proved to such an event as to allow us to retex any of the efforts that are made to deferd the lives of the residents in the ca-
China.

The den was raided yester- lay by Inspector Quincey and a body of Police, and the three men arrested were those who seemed to be managing the game, One of them made the familiar exense that he was looking for a clausman, another said he went there to satisfy his curiosity, while the other startled the Magistrate by the explanation that he went there to gamble.

He got eyes full of stars and made him feel queer two cups of tea which, Le said, 'made his generally.
