Public opinion, however, is very strong upon the shortsighted policy wlopt- ed; and it is frequently remarked that tho one recommendation of the Com mission which might have been acted pon-the appointment of a Land Board -bas not even been mooted, so far. Regarding one of the rasny branchos of the subject dealt with in the Con- masiun's Report--that of the mode of | dealing with squatters--the Surveyor Gen- eral (Ron, J. M. Price) disented from the other Commissioners; and yet, in face of this fact, this officer is still entrusted with the parrying out of the old regulations in this matter. Indeed, it would puzzle most of those concerned to know of what thesu regulations really consist. We have but little hesitation in saying that most of the action taken in this connection by the Surveyor General's Department is in viola tion of good government and of commer justice. It may be said, and with truth that much of the injustice now served out to the decapants of so-called waste land arisen izon the carelomness or the 'dis honesty of officials during the early days of big Colony. But, although this should furnish an additional reason for the exercise of consideration and forbearance in these days, the reverse appears to be the Case. A case heard in the Police Court to
