In Sumatra so day prorious to sailing. far, the only railway in operation in a pri- rate line it Deli. The Ombilien flelds have long beou food for the quantity and good quality of the coal found there. For yesra, private enterprise has vainly sought to move the Government to take some action for the development of that productiva re-be inde from Retura Fare, gíon.

In Deli, several plantors have taken to exhausted for fields growing paddy tobacco cultivation, through coolies on the estates. Natives too have been carrying on paddy growing on situilar land. Bai, for all this, the yield of rice thore so falla far below requirements that, in 1885, less than 240,000 piculs of that acticle had to be imported. Pepper growing is steadi- ly extending, save in the district of Ass- han Thore the cultivation of that product has considerably decreased in consequenon of the exactions and squeezes of the holders of the plantations. In a neighbouring district, many new pepper estates have been started. In the island of Bengkalis, ex- periments in growing that articlo havo bocn nada with satisfactory results worth mentioning.

There has been no lack of recommen- dations to start direct coolie emigration from China to Deli, as the only way for planters to become independent of the brokers in the Straits, in spite of the stock

That boycotting of some SATURDAY, the 11th June, at 3 pm., kind goes on against Deli, is the only in-taking Passengers and Freight for Japan, ference from the fact that the Netherlands the United States, and Baropa. Indian Government has just charged the Through Bills of Tading issued for trans- firm of Pasedag and Co. of Amey, to re-portation to Yokohama and other Japan crait 600 Chinese coolies for direct ship- Ports, to San Francisco, to Atlantic and mont to Banks. Coolies for Banka havo | long been imported there direct from China, without any roconrso to Straits brokere. -There is no valid reason why what has been done for Banka cannot be carried out in the interest of Deli planters. There is every prospect of the latter gaining their ead, could they only agree upon joint action and co-operation among themselves, and not shrink from exerlion and earnest efforts to remedy the evil. With a determined will, some way to solve the difficulty will soon be devised. With such materials as Chinese officials to deal with, squaring them need not be despaired of.
