THE LOSS OF THE BENTAN, The following is the narrative and find- ing of the Court which enquired into the losa of the Straits Settlements ateinar Bentan-

E. contas, the Officer in charge of the Buntar sighted a bright light ahead and shortly afterwards both sido lights of steamer came into view. The helm of the Bentan was therespon ported half a point, but as the other steamer contraued to come directly on towards them the holm was again ported a point and a half.
Whon the Fair Penang was gotting very close, the helm of the Bentan was put hard a-port, and about the saine moment the Fair Lemang struck the Bentan on the port nido just abift the after engine-room bulk. head. The vessels remained in contact for a few seconds only, the Fair Penang after warda proceeding slowly up her voyago, and the Berdan foundered in from 10 to 13 minutes after the collision within from 6 to 9 miles from the nexreat land, and more than half of her crow and passengers, in cluding her Master, Chief Engineer, and Cashier, were drowned.
The Master of the Fair Pennng states tint about half-past 11 10. on the sa night when stooring a N. W. course he saw a bright light just on his starboard bow, and in about 8 minutes afterwarde he also made out steamer's green light. The white light appeand to keep steady in the zame position, but if anything slightly to the eastwards, and the green light was visible all the time on the starboard side. He kept on his course and when the vessels were getting clone to each other the green light suddenly disgeared and a steamer was seen heading hout South, and coming atraight ou for the bridge of the Fair Per ang on the starboard side. 2. The Court also find the said John S. Harrison in default for failing to comply with Sections 16 and 17 of the Merchant Shipping Act of 1879 in not rendering any assistance whatever to the S. B., Bentan, and is not reporting the occurrence to the Master of the Formosa Light vantol.

4. The Court is clearly of opinion that it was the boundon duty of the Master of the Fair Peung to have remained by the Bentan, aud that by doing so he would Loss 201 Bhares, have neither hazarded his ship or jeopardiz ed the lives of his passengers.
Considering all the circumstances of the case, and making every allowance for the position in which tho Master was placed, the Court can come to no other decision tha enneul the Certificate of John Harrison as Master, and the said Certificate is hereby cancelled.
The Certificate of John Wilson, Chief Engineer, is herewith returned but the Court is of opinion that as he was the only other European Officer no board he might havo used stronger endeavours to induce the Master to stand by the sinking ship, more capecially as there was no appearance of water towing into the Engine-room. The certificate of the surviving officers of the Beutan are alan returned.
