Referring to the Russo-Turkish war, the loctures mo tioned Lord Boaconsfold's namo, which ovoked a perfect storm of applavice, which was long sustained, World that we had a statesman of the same mottle at the hoad of affairs now, and the lecturer, one who would give as peace with honour or war with glory. He also said that present events point to the probability of war. We must take care, the Russian hate as and mean misoldef. On the other hand,

FIGHTING IN THE SOUDAN.

ADELAIDE, March 26.

Much fighting still continues in the Sox dan.

Last Sunday a battle, lasting only twenty minutes, was fought near Tamar. The British lost one hundred killed and two hundred and forty-two wounded.

The rebels display the greatest activity, notwithstanding their enormous losses. Even the women and children fight against the English.

An adjourned inquest was held this after noon, at the Magistracy, upon the body of a Chinese girl, of about 18 years of age, which was found floating in the barbour off. the Praya West. No evidenco was forth- coming as to the identity of the doceed, and an open verdict of 'found drowned" was returned by the jury.

A Hotte paper states that the post of Con- al in the tarvitories of the African kinga and chiefs of the district adjacent to Lake Nyassx has been offered to and apcepted by Lieutenant Hawes, R.M.LI, who has boon serving under the Japanese Govern mont as professor of English in the Naval College.

THE contract for the construction of the frat of the squadron of fast steel built torpedo cruisers has been given by the Ad- miralty to Messrs. Thomson, of the Clyde- bank Shipbuilding Works, Glasgow. They have also invited tenders for two ironclads and five belted oruisers from a limited number of firms on the Clyde and else where. The roads will be 11,000 tons And the cruisers 5,000 tons displacement. The total cost is to be £3,000,000.

It was supposed that the posce colegrain, re- ceived from Reuter was merely a repetition of the Times telegram; and that no mtana whatever had been taken on the other sida to verify or confirm ita accuracy. This may be true; but it should likewise be borno in mind that the telegrams published here, on the occasion of the Fournier Convention being signed, were alan zeut Home, and that they were similarly retumed from London some time before the official con- firmation of its signatura was received.
