If they succeed, those which have the material that is, elements of wealth in them--which wa baye reason to believe some at least of them have are not prematurely aban doned, we believe very great changes might soon be brought about. The rapid extension of telegraphic lines in China, which only a few years ago were denounced and opposed on every hand, shows what great strides China may fake when once she begins to move. We have no doubt that railways will follow sooner or later, and, when a start is once made, we believe we shall see as: rapid a development as we are now witnessing in the matter of telegraphs But the question of sooner or later depends very much on the success of the joint stock companies and these in tura are no doubt dependent in some degree on the prosperity of tlie China Merchants' Company beno
