Against the increased cost of laying and main- taining the railway, as compared with the old means of transport by barges and steam-tags, will have to be placed the greater security in beavy weather obtained by the land route, in addition to those advantages above mentioned;

Concerning the output of the mines, it is worthy of note that great progress has been made daring the last two or three years. In the year 1878 the total emount raised was 14,029 tons this was more than doubled during the year 1879, the total shown for that year being 30,046 tons. A very large in- crease upon this last amount was shown. by the last year's working, and for the Erst half-year of 1881 we are informed that nearly 30,000 tons have been brought to the surface. Indeed, with que ur two more shafts, it is confidently expected that the output might be in- creased to 500 tons per day of say, roughly, allowing for New Year and other slack sensons, 160,000 tons, per annum. When it is borne in mind that this result is attainable at a cost little in

production of 14,000 tons, it maybe excess of that incurred in 1878 by the perceived why the Chinese are begin ning to understand and appreciate the value of such a work as the Keelung Colliery. Indeed, fawer Europeans are connected with the work now than were employed in 1878; and us the only additional outlay on production is to be credited to the native coal-lewers, who are paid on sa average say 40 cents per ton for their labour, the profit upon the larger output must be very consider- able.
