Under those circumstances the Captain is compelled to turn to soa ward, and perhaps face a gale or even a typhoon for hours, straining his ship and most likely damaging, both hall and cargo; while, had he but the aid of a light to mark any one point of the land, he could at once either run into an anchorage or steer direct for the en- trance to Hongkong Harbour. It is probably immaterial what point is selec ted for such a mark; but we expressed in opinion some two years ago, based upon that of many nautical authorities, that the Gap Rock should be the point chosen. The islet known as Gap Rock is. 90 feet above the sea level, and would show a light with great efe fect. As we have already hinted, however, the great difficulty seems to
be
