It is to be hoped that this scheme of superfition will now be earnestly enter- ed upon; and that no further delay will arise in the inauguration of an office

upon which much of the smoothness and fairness in the adivinistration of justice here necessarily depend. Whatever other department may yet be indebted to the ceaseless energy of Dr Eitel, it is to be hoped that this branch of sho Service will claim his chief attention. While speaking on this matter, it ap- pears to us that the position of Chief Interpreter in the Supreme Court has never yet been regarded in its proper aspect. It is a post which should be held by a man of high character as well as of special attainments; and the sa Iary attached to the position ought to be in proportion. We think that £500 a-ye is the very least that should be offered to a gentleman occupying this responsible office, and all that we know of the past history of interpretation in this Colony strengthens us in saying
