Speaking of returns, we have some- times thought that it would be an in- structive and suggestive document, wers a list of the public works that have been promised to Hongkong by Sir John Hennessy drawn up. Some of the unofficial members might call for euch a return. We can promise the compiler that a place for it shall be found in these columns, even at a little inconvenience to ourselves. The date when each work was first suggested, the number of Commissions appointed to further its consideration, the references made to England in connection therewith, the amount of dead loss to the Colonial exchequer (in que case) from nonoctura- tion of the purchased sito nod the houses that once stood thereon, the progress made or date of completion, naturally suggest themselves: to any and any other particulars that would one desirous of furnishing the fullest information, these various points ought to be carefully noted. The real Public Works here are those which have becn built in the air, and have not yet come down to the solid earth.
