and Macao, an employment to which a scanty passenger traffic is the chief in- ducement, In its other features the shipping has remained much the same as in 1878. The trade by sailing vessels shows no sign of revival, nor can it on the other band be said to have decreas ed. In connection with river steamer arrangements, there is only one notable change to record, the abandonment of
back had been carried on between the two rival companies running between Hongkong and Canton. On this- mat- ter Mr McKenn says that he does not know that any interest has suffered from the change unless it be that of the ill- conditioned class who have hitherto found a profitable employment in tra- velling cheaply between Hongkong and Canton for the purpose of carrying goods through without payment of duty."
As to the value of the trade, the report states that the year 1879 Bur- passes the immediately preceding year, and indeed all previous years since 1872

is said to be in itself perfectly intel ligible, as the Cantonese were able last year to produce food for themselves in average abundance. The improvement in the trade as a whole, which com- pensates for a decline in one of its branches, is shared in by almost all- others. By far the largest share fails to the exports, which exceeded in esti- mated value, those of the provious year by Hk. Tla, 2,000,000. A general advance is noted in foreign imports as well, and, excluding grain in the native importa In-foreign and native imports the ex timated value of the unit of each com modity was, as a rale, less than in 1878. In rice, a fall of 43 cents a picul makes the total estimated value Hk. Tis. 200,000 odd less than it would have been at the rate of the previous year. There is nothing surprising in this, it is remarked, The publication of this issue commenced since we are prepared to find the price 8.35 p.m.
