That a man of Col. Gordon's ability, and training should have accepted the comparatively insignificant post of Pri vate Secretary to the Viceroy astonished us from the very fret, and we hade it matter of comment at the time the tale. gram first appeared in our columns. He is a man in no way fitted for the Secretary, and must have been thorough- ly disgusted with the insight be got into the littlenesses of Fudien social life even in his brief apprenticeship. It speaks touch for his wisdom that, fading so soon that ho was the round men in the square hole, he was so ready to throw up the task he had undertaken.

a manly one. We admit that it, as a whole, as is also his letter to the Parses friend published in our local columns, is too largely interlarded with, scriptural phrases and godly references to be a model of newspaper composition; but that may pass. PASSENGERS arriving in Hongkong, or sty
other persons who may desire to act-- sult the files of local, China, Japan, American, English, Indian or Agaten - lan newspapers, are invited to call at the “CHINA MAIL" Office, where over sixty newspapers, dailios and week,
of one kind or another or a course of con-
duct which compelled the Colonel to re- sign. This no one can do in face of that letter. People might have been not slow to say that the Marquis being (if not a Jesuit) a "vert" and a strong holder of his new opinionsas all 'verts are, and Col. Gordon being a Protestant of the most" pronounced type, an evangelical man who values his religion above all other religions and its spread above all other objects in life, it was an incompatabi- lity of religions feeling that separate them. That view is killed too, we should say, by the Colonel's letter, for he bears what seems to be earnest and intended testimony in avery sentence to Lord Ri pon's religious character. These tributes may have in them a tinge of sarcasm but we should hold "Col. Gordon für above" anything of the kind on a subject of this sort. All that Col. Gordon desired to tell the public his letter says most fully, It lies in the words "I sloneam to blame for this; not the Marquis, who is a good. and holy man." He keeps bis reasons to himself for the unparalleled step that he wastaken. Butanybody who knows what Col Gordon is, what he has done and what he has been accustomed to, and who knows at the same time what the main duties of a Private Secretary are, what the pettifogging, wearying rub- bishy details are of the duties of a Private Secretary even to such a mighty poten- tate as the Viceroy of India, does not require to go far to search for his hidden objection to the position. We can say but little you of the effect his movs ments are likely to have on the position of parties in the matters between Russia-- and China. It is satisfactory to know that he comes in the intereste of Peace; that he is invited to China by the head of the peace party and that his avowed object is to avert the rupture that, has threatened for some time past. We shall be able to say later on with more car- cainty what probability there is of his accomplishing that consummation, so greatly to be desired.
