A shocking and very painful affair has taken place in the English Hotel, Hornby Row. Yesterday afternoon, "Colonel Isaac Austin," a member of Dave Carson's Variety Troupe, known aa the American sharpshooter, made an attempt on his life, which but for prompt medical aid, would have ended fatally. Colonel Austin, it is stated, was a man of vory abatemious habits, and rarely drank spirits. Yesterday, however, he appears to have been prevailed upon to indulge in a little, which seemed to have affected him in a peculiar way. talking with his friends downstairs, he woat up to his room, between 4 and 5 o'clock, and a remark or two made by his wife, acted upon him so, that be suddenly woized a razor, unfortunately lying too conveniently near, and drew it across his throat. It was the work of a moment, and he fell heavily to the ground, off his chair, bleeding profusely. Ira Austin rushed out calling for sexist- ance, which luckily was at hand. DrTuohy, an army surgeon, lived on the premises, and instantly went up. He found that Mr Austin had drawn the razor across in an upward direction, severing o main artery, but leaving the windpipe aninjured. The hemorrhage, however, was copious, and the sufferer was sinking with exhaustion from loss of blood, but every available means was resort- ed to in order to stop the bleeding. Dr da Cunha who resides close to the hotel was sent for, and Drs Blang and The Cody also came in soon after. bloeding was eventually stopped, and the wound sewed up, while MrAustin was in an unconscious state. He recovered his senses after a time, and expressed his regret at what he had done, asked very kindly atter his wife, and enquired whether he would live. With perfect quiet, and the avoidance of anything that might tend to excite him, hopes are entertained of his recovery, but he was not pronounced out of danger at 10 o'clock last night. Up to the time of this going to press he was sensible and progressing favourably. Colonal Austin is an elderly man, but of a strong con- stitution, wiry and muscular, and, as-we have mentioned, almost a teetotaller in habits. He may therefore he able to pull through.
