came to the knowledge of many of the leading Chinese, after its publication, The style of the eo called translation would appear to bear out the information which has reached as, to the effect that a foreign gentleman interested in Japan was the prime mover of this representa tion, for the petition above given has all the appearance of being an original document, while it bears no resemblanco whatever to a translation from Chinese into English: This strong probability does not necessarily affect the merits of the question, whether the Tapiose should be honoured with the duty of providing a coinage for this Colony, although it many have a certain bearing npon the way in which native petitions may be got up in Hongkong, and throw some light upon the movements of a well-known though only occasional mem ber of this foreign community,
Whether or not the legalisation of the yen in this Colony would meet with the approval of the foreign and native com- munity, there ja every reason to believe that it would be beartily welcomed by
