January 29th. 81,-I think a fictitious importance has been attached to the visit of Lau Kwan-yih to Hongkong. It is in no senso whatever an act of the Chinese Government or of Chinese official. It was a private visit from a gentleman who held the position of Viceroy of the Two Kwang but did not hold it when he came here, and who le to hold the office of the Two Klang but did not hold it when he came here. He was careful to explain this, and emphatic to bluntness in explaining that had he been fa any office he could have paid no visit to this Colony or the Governor thereof, with- out referring to Peking for permission. Again, the visit was a return visit to one
Speaking of war, I may mention a rather curfous fact in regard to the war in Zalu- land. It has already been put almost on the boards" here; at all events it has been crousised. That comes about in this way. The Brothers Cooke of well-known drous famo-built a circus bere several years ago; and in opening it for this winter's BABOR they presented a "grand startling military spectacle" which pourtrays or travestion the incidents of leandula and Rocko's Drift.

provont the grand inquest of the people from presenting him for trial before the har of the Senate. Ho la prepared to take the same action in regard to Soward.
In thus doing Mr. Evarts has assumed such responsibility for the criminal acts of his proteges as clearly render him a fit subject for impeachment. If it be not a high erlms it is surely a misdemeanor for a Soo etary of State to knowingly and wilful- ly keep thieves in high official stating, and to abield them from the trial and punish- wont provided for such cases. In private to the man who shelters and protects a criminal, and alda him to evade pursuit, is properly regarded as sharing the guilt of the criminal thus assisted. How much greater is the offense of the bend of a department intrusted with the honor of tho Nation who keeps criminals in diplomatie positions to insult friendly powere and disgrace their own government, who shielde them from Investigation by their masters, the people's Congress, who wards off tho blows of justice as long as he can, and when he can no longer save their backs from the lash, pulls them out of the way where they ou laugh at the indigestion of their insulted and disgraced country? That lixs been the course of William: M. Evarts, Secretary of State, and for that bo ought to be promptly impeached, unless we have an oficial class in this country who are above the reach of the people,--Washing- ton Post.

To dog fanciers and sportemen in general the following paragraph from a Shanghai paper will doubtless be of interest :-
A pointer dog bred in Japan of a French breed, under treatment by Mr H. E. Hall, Veterinarian, for chronic hepatitis, that was apparently recovering very fast, and looked well on Saturday night, was found dend on Sunday morning from saf- focation. On a post mortem examina- tion being made by Mr Hall, the breast and left lugg wore found full of worma, similar to what have been found in dogs in Shanghai before, But on oxamin- ing the kidneys he found a large worm of blood red colour measuring 11 inches in length, and 7-16ths of an inch in diameter, the oyes, mouth, and nostrils of which were quite visible to the naked eye. The whole have been preserved in separate bottles, and are now at the Shanghal Dispensary, Canton Road, where they cau be seen by those interested in dogs and their diseases.

Opposition on the principal line of the Company's traffe having been brought to an end as mentioned above, the Directors deemed the Company's fleet aufficiently well adapted and large enough for prosent requirements. The Powan has proved a most efficient and economical boat for the Night service in which she is now employed. The Directors have, therefore, cancelled the contracts for a new Steamer mande with Mesars Wm. Denny and Brothers, from whom the Company met with the greatest consideration in withdrawing their order.
