and, in the interests of the public, they are generally ready enough to state their view of the defendant's conduct. There is this much to be said to the credit of buman nature that the remark that the plea has been used in the way the law intended is more often heard from the Court than any animadversions on the plaintift who has sheltered himself under prescription or special defence. This is be cause in almost all cases in which the Law of the Land refuses to enforce the payment of a debt the Law of Honour leads men to do their duty. No man with an iota of honour in his composition would, while acknowledging a debt, ever. think of attempting, on the simple ground that that debt was based on a gambling tran saation, to defy a Court of Justice to give judgment against him. In the same way no man with a spark of honour in his heart would evade payment of kis hotel ohite on the simple ground that none of them were for more than $5. No man with a vestige of principle in him ever pleaded his minority to a claim for debt, unless it was a case in which he had been imposed upon by unscrupulous harpies. Every man who shelters him. dealt with, "to avoid a fair obligation or self under any of the privileges we have

Wreating a good and sound general prin. ciple from its proper purpose to accomp. lish such an unworthy end as defeating those to whom he is honestly indebted,

BONGKONG, WEDNESDAY, JAN. 21, 1880.

We had a case in the Summary Juris diction Court Rome six weeks ago or more, in which a firm of hotalkeepers failed to secure the remedy they sought against a debtor, simply because none of his chits were over $5 (although together they ran up to more than that sum); and this week we have been edified by an unprincipled attempt made in public, on the simple grounil that it
