is one more added to those unsolved pro- bloms which have been propounded by the brilliant postal authorities of the Straits. "If the leisurely journey of the adria is sup- posed to incur an extra charge to the Post Office by way of "acceleration of mails," then it only seems fair that the person who conceived this erratio notion of transferring the mail should pay for the crab-like movement. The P& O. Company might also have a small claim for extra, coal which this "acceloration" has involved. Will, or can, our Postmaster General save ́us from this terrible energy of the Straits officials? At least the commercial commu nity will be much obliged if he will try,

YESTERDAY afternoon Mr J. H. Smith, of Mosers Blackhead & Co., had a rare and unexpected pices of sport at Kowloon. While cruising in a steam launch in Kow-- loon Bay the party of which he was a zem ber came upon a wild boar making his way apparently from the mainland to Stone cutters' Island. As he seemed to be rather exhausted a rope was made fast to his bind legs and he was without difficulty hauled “on board, -At first he seemed comparatively contented with his lot and kept pretty quiet, but on regaining his strength be made manifest signs of impatience, at one time looking asif he would prefer having the whole bost to himself. By the aid of boat hooks, &o., a chain about 40 ft. long was made fast to his body, and on reaching the shore: he was induced to land. Ho no sooner felt himself on terra firma than he hogan more fally to display the instincts of his poraine na- ture and made every effort to release himself, showing fight very earnestly and sont- tering the affrighted natives in all directions. By dint of careful manoeuvering the chain was made fast to a garden-roller, the boar meanwhile making terrible efforts to charge bis captors. Mr Smith procured a rifle and fired twice at the beast from under cover of some shrubbery; the first shot taking effect in the snout produced the most violent rage; the second hitting him over the right eye, gave him his quietus. The animal is a fine speci- men and weighs 156 lbs. Sport in our neighbourhood is rather limited. An effort was made a few years ago to provide rabbit shooting on Stonecutters' Island, but this was unsuccessful; tigers have been heard of two or three times, one of them, it was said, coming as near and handy as Wanchai, but these have only been rumours; if a few wild boars are about to pay us a visit, the heart of the sportsman will be delighted.
YOKOHAMA seems to be going ahead; the fsilowing, which is a true copy of an “extra” published by the Japan Gazette the other day, could not have emanated from a news- paper office in any town but one of great mercantile importance, where the never ceasing roar of sommerge resounds wildly up on the air-

Most of the visitors were introduced to the Pro- fessor, with whose genial and unseauming manner everyone was delighted. The lines showing each day's sailing crossed what as eat down on the chart was a large continent of land, but the Vega there got no soundings.
