THE Foochow Herald states that Mr Kaw Hong Beng's scholastio services have been retained by a distinguished member of the foreign diplomatic corpa at-Feking; and it is therefore not improbable that "Foochow will be deprived, for a time at least, of its greatest and most accomplished sinologue,"
THE Ladies' Parse, presented at the Shang. hai Regatta for Junior Soullers, was won almost as he liked" by Mr Meuser, who was formerly well known in boating ciroles here. Another "oar," who has been even more recently among the competitors at the Hongkong Regattas, appears under les advantageous circumstances in the following description, from the N, C. Daily News:-

THE Japan Herald says:-The Tokio Geo- graphical Society has presented Professor Nordenskjold with a large silver medal in memory of the entertainment given, on the 10th ult., to the chief and members of the' Fega expedition. The medal is nearly six inches in diameter, and an inch and a balf thick. On its obverse a map of thoạ world, with the route of the Vega, is embossed in gold; in the middle of Asia is the following inscription in Japanose character:
Tokio, Japan,
"Society for Geographical Science. 16th September, 1879
The reverse bears likewise an inscription in Japanese characters to the following effoot:
"The Vega arrived at Yokabanın on the 2nd September from a voyage through the ice sea, a feat now performed for the first time, and of the greatest importance for geographical science. We congratulate ourselves upon having the honor to receive the members of the expedition at dinner to day, and, as a souvenir, we present this medal to the chief of the expedition, Pro- fessor Nordenskjold.”
Tan rassou for transferring Mr W. G. Pal grave from Sophia to Siam la not yet ap- parent, though it is not very hard to guess why Mr T. G., Knox should be removed." Mr Knox married a Slaniese lady. Tanny. zon's "Mated with a squalid Savage" hardly expresses the idea, for the Slamèse lady was connected with the local nobility with whom, in due couras, Mr Knox be. came connected also in another way. His danzliter bas married a Siamese noble; and
difference between this noble and the Siamese Government seems to have been the remote cause of Mr Palgrave's appolut- ment to Siam. The noble, according to the Straits papers, committed some offence against Siamese law, and to save him from the consequences, Me Knox is said to have telegraphed for a Beltlin man-of-war; and to have otherwise supported his daughter's husband. It may be that for this indiscre
tion Mr Knox is being transferred, but even rumour does not show cause why Mr. Palgrave, of all men, should be brought such a long way to take his place. The Levant Herald, however, of the 3rd Sep- tember, notes that "Mr W. Palgrave,

LONDON, Nov. 4. A Turkish war vessel has arrived and an Austrian Squadron is expected at Salonika to see the carrying out of reforms according to Treaty stipulations.
LOCAL AND GENERAL. Ir may be noted that any one desirous of obtaluing copies of our Overland issue (Overland China Mail, of date 8th Nov.,) should send in their orders as soon as pos- sible. Coples will be posted to any home address given. It will contain a report of the Council meeting held to-day.
Ir is satisfactory to learn that no life has been lost in the disaster to the P, & O. str. Hindostan, according to the statement in the last Reuter's talegram. It would have | been more satisfactory to have heard more particulars, but it may be concluded that the lost mail was a local and not a heavy home mail, as that for Calcutta now goes by rail from Bombay.
