An influential mesting was held at the Hongkong Club this afternoon, when the following resolution was proposed by Me T. C. Hayllar, Q.C., seconded by the Hon. W. Keswick, and carried unanimonaly :-
"That a subscription list be opened to raise a fund to make an appropriato pre- sentation to Professor Nördenskjöld, in commemoration of his eminent services to science and navigation, and that the fol- lowing gentlemen be appointed a Commit- tee to carry out the above object-Hon. W. Koswick (Chairman), Mesars Arnhold, Belilios, Bottomley, Crawford, Dalrymple, Degensor, Hayllar, Hoppius, Jackson, Kir, Mackintosh, Hon. P. Ryrie, Reiners, Rutturjee, Sassoon (F. D.), Wood, Young (W. S.), and J. B. Coughtrie, secretary."
Mr Koswick, who presided at the meet ing, referred to its object by saying that there was a general feeling that some re- cognition should be accorded to Professor Nördenskjöld's services, the more especially as Hongkong way the first British port at which the now famous explorer had touched on his homeward route.
SHANGHAI RACES.

From the recollection of the Justices it was fired that in the case of the hotels which were in an indirect way complained of as possessing advantages which were not dealt out to the other places, it had been simply agreed amongst the Justices that they would not favour any attempt to pro secute them for keeping open honsus until midnight. The law apparently did not allow the Justices to give any such power to the innkeepers as that they seemingly desired to claim as having been handed over to them. As Capt. Deane said, there was nothing to prevent anybody lodging a com- plaint against any of these houses to morrow, which keep open till twolge o'cloak, and there was nothing to prevent such informant getting a conviction against the keeper of the place.
house for whom he made this application Mr Wotton explained that the thres
largely patronised by ship captains, en- were respectable houses, generally and ginoors and mates, men following a sea- faring life but not rough common sailers, that is to say, not men before the mast. He strongly urged the polat that, as these houses paid the same rooney to the Govern mont an the higher olaas houses did, they should have the same return for their money.
Capt. Deane, Mr Tonnochy and Mr Lister said they did not see how the bar could be separated from the billiard table. Me Justices to keep the billiard table open to Wotton applied for permission from the visitors until 12 o'clock, the bar to be closed at 11. The fact of the matter was that the two could not be separated: either both must be open or both must be closed.
Capt. Deane further suggested that a simple expression from the Justions that they did not desire any prosecntion to
