good chance and embraced it with alacrity. The further optional term of two years was accordingly arranged for; and we have every reason to believe that the contract was signed a few days ago, which gives the Okt Hongkong Farmer undisputed possession, of the Macao monopoly until May 31, 1883. The Press continues :—
We are quite unable to suggest a remedy for the evil, other than the purchase by the: Hongkong firm of the Macao Farm as soon as the present lease expires. Meantime the position of affairs is so unpromising that the iate sale of the Opium Farm can no longer be regarded with satisfaction, and certainly cannot be scored as a financial or adminis trative success. Of course if Mr Hennessy ean count on-the friendly co-operation of the Macao Government, the competition now ao damaging to the Hongkong Farm will that a Colony whose trade has disappeared through the establishment of this free port will like to loss an opportunity of securing a little socession to its revenue at our expense.

THE loss of the Opium Export trade, which must fall first upon the new Opium Farmer, and next upon the finances of this Colony, is probably the all-engrossing question of the hour; and it is desirable that it should be looked fairly in the face. In commenting opon this subject, our contemporary of this morning has fallen into more than one error as to his facts, while his deduc- tions are by no means beyond exception. If, as is alleged, the present Farmer caught at the monopoly by an advance 0022 of $4000 over that of the former holder, A SPECIAL Sessions of the Justices of the and believed he was securing prize, Peace will be held on the 4th November, there can surely be no reason for saying
