For SHANGHAI,—

The majority of the native women prefer the Chinese for husbands. Their habits are better than those of the natives. They work hard, accumulate property, become shop- keopers, have homes and take care of them. The natives are lazy, shiftless fellows, con- tent with tam patch, mat and poi. The Chinamen look out for the rainy day, the natives do not. Hence the reason of the choice. The Anglo-Saxon take the cultured few, the Chinese the mass of the women. result in the production of a weak progeny, While the native marriages are fruitless, or those between nativo women and foreigners produce a race superior in intellect and physique to the mothers. There are only 235 full-blooded Chinese women in the Kingdom, and these are all wives. Chinese prostitution is unknown.

It is also said that the curse of Opium is equally unknown in Honolulu, with what truth we are not in a position to state. But the picture drawn of the condition of the Chinese in that part of the world is such that it will be all the more interesting to watch the progress of this silent "taking possession of the

In other parts of the world, it is true, the Chinese have settled even in greater numbers than in Hawaii; but in no country does the race appear to have so thoroughly adapted itself, or so entirely reproduced the domestic virtues which have hitherto been its greatest strength.

THE CAPE.

.

We note a telegram in the Australian papers, dated London August 6th, announcing the death of Charles Foohter, the actor, at the age of 66. This distinguished actor was born in London, Hanway Yard, Oxford-street; his father a German, his mother an Englishwo- man. He was educated in France, to some extent, as a soulptor; but his inclinations tended towards the stage. He made his debut at the Sallo Moliere, in "Le Marie de la Veuve," spent some weeks at the Conserva- tory, and enrolled himself in a troupe that made the round of Italy. On bis return he applied himself to sculpture, which con- tinued to be the occupation of his leisure. He appeared at Berlin in 1848. His first success on the French stage was as Duval, in "La Dame aux Camelias," On the his impersonation of Shakespeare's "Ham- English stage he became popular through let," in which character he first appeared at the Princess's Theatre in 1860. He also appeared as Othello at the same theatre in 1881. He subsequently became leases of the Lyceum, and was most successful in the pieces there produced and played, of "The Duke's Motto," "Bel Demonio," "The Long Strike," and other successful pieces, in most of which he played the principal character. In 1870 he visited the United States, where he achieved a decided auccess as an actor. He has remained there since, making only occasional visits to England. We take the following item from a San Francisco paper of the 16th:--

Benjamin Hallett, a native of England, 30 years of age, one of the crew of the ship Black Hawk, committed suicide last evening (17th July) at a sailors' boarding house on Clark street, by stabbing himself. Previous to the commission of the act, he was in the bar-room of the hotel, chatting with his shipmates, when, shaking them by the hand, he exclaimed, "I'm going, I'm going," and drawing a sheath knife plunged it deeply into his breast. He died almost instantly. The deceased arrived in port from China about two weeks ago, when he learned that

had been married to another, and he became despondent.
