The part which each nationality plays in this large and growing trade will be most readily shown by giving a portion of the tables which accompany the report bearing upon this branch of the subject, and also that for the previous year (1877). By these tabular statements it will be seen that 74.23 per cent, of the tonnage was British, as against 75.68 Tan Spanish war veszel Fencedora was 10 a.m.-Kwangling leaves for Coast per cent in 1877, showing that the comtowed over to Kowloon Decks this morning

Ten years ago the tonnage entered at Hong- kong reached what may be termed zero, and it is satisfactory to note that the totals above given for last year are the highest shown during the last twelve years, while they are nearly twice as large as those for 1868. This satisfac tory rise has been steadily made ever since 1874-from about 3,150,000 in 1874, to the present figure. The junk tonnage maintains a very steady ohar- acter, and varies but slightly from one year to another, notwithstanding the fact that competition with steam in the Chi- nese steamer company might have been expected materially to have diminished its extent. Exclusive of the purely local trade already mentioned the share of tonnage represented by junks was 1,761,496, against 1,798,788 in 1877, or a decrease this year of 37,292 tona. The increase therefore obtained was entirely in foreign bottoms, which mode of transit. has steadily increased from one and a half million tons in 1874 to the present
