A STRANGE CHARGE.
Chuh Akan, a cook, was charged with stealing $5.50 the moneys of his mistress, a prostitute named Sarah Rogerson. Complainant sald she left the house in charge of defendant, having previously pat the money into a box. On her return the money was gone. She had recently, she said, lost lots of things,
Defendant denied the charge, and said the complainant was never out of the house the whole day. A sailor was with her, and both were drunk, The complaluant and the seaman beat him. The seaman said he had lost some mo- ney, but afterwards found it. Defendant asked the woman why she had beaten bim, and demanded his wages. She refused to pay him; so he called a constable to take har into custody. When the constable arrived, she said something to him, and he (defendant) was taken into custody iratead. An Indian Constable corroborated de- fendant's statement.
The case was remanded till Monday next, the 16th instant.
