ATTEMPTING TO EXTORT MONEY.

Wong Asing, and Wong Alol, seamen, were charged with attempting to extort money from the master of the Yi Bing fishing junk, at Yow-mah-ti. It appears that the junk was anchored at Yow-mah-ti, on the morning of the 31st ultimo, when the defendants came alongside and hailed her. They enquired for the manter of the junk, and on his appearing, they asked for the loan of three taels, remarking that if he did not comply with their request they would cause him no end of trouble when he got to sea. They were, they said, employed by the salt revenue collector. The master of the junk said he would not give them caab, and if they attempted to extort money he would give them into custody, They persisted in their demand and would not leave the junk:

The complainant's statement was Gorro borated by one Kwok Asz, the master of a salt shop at Yow-mah-ti.

Defendants, who denied the charge, but occurred, were sent to four months' hard gave totally different ascounts of what had labour each, and were called upon to enter into their personal recognizances in $50 each to be of good behaviour for twelve months.

The case was then adjourned till Tues. day, the 10th instant, to allow defendant an opportunity of consulting with his soll elter, bail to be granted as before ($500).

THE RENDITION OASE,

The remanded case in which application was made for the rendition of thirteen men for burglary and murder at a place called Tein Kong, in the Poon Yu district, near Canton, was resumed to day before Mr Mr Bharp appeared to watch the case on behalf of the officer applying for the rendi. tion of the men, and Mr Ng Choy appeared to defend the accused. fully reported. The defendants are natives of the village in which the robbery is said to bave taken pisos, and in fact are clansmen of the men said to have been robbed or murdered, but belong to another division of the clan.

Mr Ng Choy endeavoured to shew in his cross-examination of the witnesses that there was in fact no robbery, but that the whole affair arose out of a dispute amongst the various divisions of the clan.

The first and fourth defendants were fined $1 each for breach of orders, in having a light in their quarters after hours.

Mr Ng Oboy cross-examined him at great length; but was unable to shake his testi- mony. He said that the men remained in his uncle's house as long as a person would take to eat a meal of rios (however long that may be).
