REFERRING to the para which appeared in the L. & C. Express lately, stating that the Chinese Merchants' Company was to wind up its affairs, and which we reproduced on its receipt here, the Mercury says:

We learn that the statement of the Express on the subject of this Company, had a foundation in fact. The subject was mooted, and referred to capitalists in Ame rica; but up to this time, we believe it has come to nothing.

RELATIVE to the run down the river, from Hankow, of the Glencoe steamer, the News states that, arriving at Woosung at 8.15 on Sunday evening, she made the run from Hankow under forty hours, notwithstand- ing that she had to anchor over an hour on three different occasions on account of fog. She took ber mails and passengers on board at Woosung, and proceeded on her voyage to London at daylight next morning. News respecting the other tea steamers was somewhat indefinite. The Chinese Revenne Cruiser Ling Feng, Capt. Farrow, was the next to dress ship, and then the British steamers and sailing vessels followed suit, and all the Foreign shipping in harbour blazed with banting in honour of the day."

A fresh breeze prevailed throughout; quite sufficient to test the relative merits of the sailing craft, and not enough to spoil the work of the rowing boats. In fact a more perfect day for the occasion could not be imagined; although some few races (as is generally the case) had to be omitted, the Regatta of 1879 may he regarded as the most brilliant affair of the kind that has yet taken place in Amoy.

This result is in a great messure due to Capt. Farrow of the Ling Feng, who not only kindly placed his vessel at the dis- posal of the Committee as Flagship, but, together with his officers, earned the warm thanks of the community for the efforts made, not only to secure success to the races themselves, but also to render the event most agreeable and enjoyable to all present and in every way worthy of the leading Regatta in China.

Fifty guests sat down to tiffin, of whom 15 wore those whose presence forms at oneo the greatest charm and the greatest distrae tien to any Regatta in the world, and about 30 or 40 1bro-visitors assembled on board the Flagship during the course of the day.

A correspondent writes to ask what has become of the landly-trumpeted project of a cotton factory, to be established under native auspices in this neighbourhood. The noiss of the spindles has not-yet bepu heard, although several months have passed since the project was first mooted.

We have been favoured with the in- spection of copies of a not badly-executed portrait of General Grant, drawn on stono, the work of a Chinese artist, and published at the Shenpao office. It is surrounded with an ornamental border and descriptive text, and we hear the natives are buying the picture rapidly. It is a cario in its way.

The proposed International Rifle Match, if it can be carried out, which it is hoped may be found possible, will be likely to prove a more than usually interesting one. Americans, English, French, and Germans, with men of other nationalities, will, it is said, be invited to participate.
