*MISCONDUCT AS A POZICE CONSTABLE, Folice Sergt. Nicholas Porry was charged with negligently allowing a prisoner to es- caps. It appears that a Chinese was 601- victed and fined $150 or 3 months' hard labour for a breach of the "Exoise Ordin- an 1858-1879" on the 5th instant, and whilst the Sergeant was engaged in the Clerks' Office at the magistracy in giving some particulars as to the execution. of an arrest warrant, his prisoner managed to

uske his escape.

Mr Johnson from the firms of Messrs. Sharp, Teller and Johnson appeared on behalf of the Opium Farmers, and spoke to the efficient manner in which the defendant bad dono hia duty in connection with the Opium Farmer, and pointed out that al- though the latter lost half of the fine had the amount been paid, he begged of the magistrate to deal as leniently as possible with the case.

This commendable state of affairs-in the midst of these hard times-speaks highly for the enterprise of our citizens. The new buildings, however, are, almost without exception, Chinese. The promises now occupied by the Uriental Bank are also to be torn down to make way for Chinese honses. The time is probably not far distant, when the whole of the Praya and Queen's Road, as far east as the City Hall, I will be given up to them, and no doubt, the foreigners will ultimately be driven up to the Pask.
