During the twelve years about to expire, £6,800,000 has been paid the Company, in Government subsidios, and a large porportion of that im has heen granted from the feeling that it was necessary to maintain a fleet available as transporte in emergencies; and on condition that the P. & 0. would maintain such a fleet the grants were voted. It has been proved by recent events, first, that it was quite unneces mary for, Goverment to pay away tho public funds for any such purpose; and in the second place the P. 0.
