Trulmer's Uriental Record contains the fol owing notice of the China Review :—“ Thi ia the title of a publication, the first number of which has lately reached us from Hong kong, where it has been set on foot as in some respecto a continuation of Noter and Queries on China and Japan, the extinction of which neeful serial a year or two ago has been much regrotted in Europe as well a in China. Thepresent publication, judging by the number now before us, la intended to occupy a position, as regards China and the uvighbouring countries, somewhat similar to that which has been filled in India by the Calcutta Review. The great degree of at tention that has been bestowed of late years upon the investigation of Chinese literature, antiquities, and social developments, to say nothing of linguistic studies, has led to the accumulation of important stores of inform affon, rendering some suck channel of pub licity as is now provided extremely desir able; and contributions of much interest way fairly be looked for from the members of the foreign consular services, the Chinese Customs corps, and the missionary body, among whom a high degree of Chinese scholarship is now assiduously cultivated, and, who are severally represented in the first uumber of the Reviews by papers highly creditable to their respective authors. In
Rev. E. J. Eital, to which the place of a paper on Dr. Lege's She King, by the honour is deservedly given, an excellent stigmary
in presented of the chronological problems and arguments involved in con- nexion with this important work. Some! translations from Chinese novels and plays are marked by both accumoy and freshness of style; and an account of the career of the Chinese poet-statesman of the eleventh century, Su Tung-p'o, by Mr. E. C. Bowra, is not only historically valuable, but is also distinguished by ita literary grace. Beside notices of new books relating to China sad the East, which will be a useful feature of the Review, if carried out with punctuality and detail, we are glad to notice that "Notes" and "Querics" are destined to find a place in its pager also. It is to be hoped that this opening for contributions on Chinese subjects ay ovoke a similar degree of literary real to that which was displayed during the lifetime of its prede cessor in the field, and that the China Review
