We will not follow Mr Morrison through his observations on the rise and fail of the Woosong Railway. Enough has perhaps been written on this subject. Mr Morrison considers that the real obatacle to the introduction of railways in China is that the Imperial Government does not want them. He does not he lieve that the people would be opposed to them, or that there are any natural or artificial dithioulties that may be regarded as formidable in the way of their introduction, beyond the ill-will of the Peking Government, Mr Morrison bases his hope in the ultimate overthrow of this obstacle on the increasing power of the party of progress which has sprang up in, the country. through sheer force of numbers and necessity. As to the most useful and ' desirable railway routes, Mr Morrison believes that a line from Peking to a good seaport would be one of the most important ones in the Empire. Dealing with trunk lines, he says that of all the places he has visited, the line of country appearing the most evitable for a main trunk railway was between Canton and Wuchang-fu, the latter being a city on the south side of the Yangtze, immediately opposite Han kow. This line would be about seven hundred miles in length. It would

Mr Mor. rison is persuaded that there is no unde veloped country in the world where a railway is more needed, or where it would prove more remunerative than here.
