He made a desperato cut at the Constable, who warded it off with his staff, which bears unmistake able evidence of the strength of the blow. The Constable lost no time in turning the tables upon his amailant and knocked him down. With reference to the open, bare-faced murders and robberies with impunity, from Wing Lock Street downwards, and more especially the recent wholesale liberation of Scoundrels from Hongkong Gaol by our eympathising Governor the other day-we, as a body of Europeans, from the manager downward, propose holding a meeting among ourselves to devise a method (before it is too late) for the best means of defending our lives and property, as well as the pro- perty of our employers. As an eye-witness @bout this quarter for a period of two years, I have on various occasions bean out in the evenings, and I have seldom or aver seen any European Polisanan, except ing only a Sergeant belonging to No. One Station. I also find that there are only one or two Indians between No. 2 Station and the Bridge near Jardine's Bazar from 6 p.m. to a.m. I have also been in- formed that their are two Europeaus pa- trolling on the same beat from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.; but I have failed to see them my self, as has also every other person about here. Now, Mr Editor, would you kindly come to the front and let this be felt in the proper quarter; and send it home, in the true spirit of the public interest that you are known to exercise. In conclusion, woe betide us in the event of an attack, for all the good that the beloved Chinese "look. on" would do us.
