His hearers ra- sponded to thom with "Applause.” A great deal was, however, made of the increased teaching of English in the Government, schools of the Colony, and deservedly so. It is one of those mattera in which His Excellency bas earned some credit for himself; he discovered the amount of English that was being taught in the Central School; came to the conclusion that it was not sufficient, and, backed up by almost the entire community, he has, after about a year's hard and anxious labour, sucoseded in effecting arrangements by which it in hoped the Chinese in the Colony will be induced to dabble a little more deeply in the "heathen" tongue. Any way, we believe that orders have been given to considerably extend the time devoted to English studies in the Central School, while two native teachers of English, at loast, have been appointed to the Central or the other Government schools
