We are afraid not. The law can soar cely prevent a landlord from charging whatever rent, for his own dwellings, he. pleases, provided bo proceeds in a legal manner. At the same time, howover,

like that of Christmas Day to make ox- the taking advantage of a publio calamity traordinary profits in the heartless way indicated, is not a proceeding savouring very strongly of charity and brotherly love, In point of fact, we should blush for the Christian professions of sny, individual taking such a course. The extra profits thus made by landlorda can only be ephemeral ones. It may be reasonably anticipated that within six or eight months from the present date the whole of the houses destroyed will be replaced, possibly in many instances by even more commodious ones, and as the scarcity of house accommodation will not be without some effect upon the population, the exorbitant house rants which it is said some landlords are now endeavouring to exact must fall to their original amounts, and perhaps go even lower.

It is satisfactory to learn, as we do, that the Government intend taking stepa to remedy the-as the late fire demon- strated inefficient arrangements here for grappling with serious conflagrations. We believe it is intended to procure a practical leading firemen from England, and to increase the staff of the paid and permanent firemen. It is also in con- templation, we understand, to largely increase the supply of water; to form a book and ladder brigade; and to provide one or more steam fire engines capable of being worked on the upper levels of the town,

The engines now in the Colony appear to be too unwieldy for work on some of the upper resda. One result of these new arrangements will be that the necessity of blowing up houses with gunpowder er dynamite is not likely to again arise. Judg Transfer Books of B., C. & M.
