A second, and more probable reason is, that, owing to the difioulties of the route during the winter season, the fur ther advance of all the invading forces has been postponed until the return of the warm weather. When war was de clared, it was certainly not contemplated by any of our Indian contemporaries that General Roberts's force would ad- vance beyond Poiwar during the winter, or that the Khyber Pass force would advance beyond Jallalabad. Both these places have now been reached, and Gene ral Roberts has got as far as Shutar Gurdan.

If Takoob Khan has been proclaimed Ameer of Afghanistan, it is questionable if the British troops will march to Cabul at all. The announcement of this pro- clamation was made in the telegram wo published towards the end of last week, and follows one, dated the 23rd De cember, atating "It is reported that the Ameer has fled, leaving Yakoob Khan in power." Hence it may be conjectured how this proclamation has been brought about. Yakoob had been imprisoned for several years previous to the outbreak of the present war by the Ameer, and possibly the result of Yakoob coming into power may be the abandonment of the defence against the advance of the British troops on the part of the new ruler, and successful efforts to conclude peace. Under the circum- stances the English Government is likely to lend a very favourable car to repre- sentations from the new Ameer. Should peace be thus concluded another feather will be placed in the cap of the Beacons. field Government, Formerly Takoob Khan was distinguished by much energy and military skill, but there have been rumours that confinement in prison had
